Stourbridge Lion 1829.
-
The "iron monster"
On the morning of August 8, 1829, the Stourbridge Lion became the first true locomotive (that is, one designed to pull railroad cars) to operate in the United States or anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere. The British-built engine was part of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Co.'s plan to transport anthracite coal.2362

Best Friend of Charleston 1830.
-
On Christmas Day 1830, the "Best Friend of Charleston," the first regularly scheduled steam passenger train in America, carried 40 people, over 300 pounds of cargo, and the future of South Carolina. When it left Charleston, for a six mile journey, it marked a revolution that has yet to end.

John Bull 1831.
-
The John Bull was built by Robert Stephenson and Company in England and purchased by the Camden and Amboy Railroad and Transportation Company in 1831. Previously American railroads had tried to build their own locomotives, but the Camden and Amboy decided to buy a locomotive type that had already proven itself. The John Bull was used by the railroad for many years.

Brother Jonathan 1832.
-
The first 4-2-0 built was the Experiment (later named Brother Jonathan) for the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad in 1832. It was built by the West Point Foundry based on a design by John B. Jervis. Having little else to reference, the manufacturers patterned the boiler and valve gears after locomotives built by Robert Stephenson of England.
